A genuine legend of French “chanson”, Jean-Philippe Smet, aka Johnny Hallyday, was born on June 15, 1943 in Paris.

With a career spanning more than five decades, he is one of the most famous French-language singers and one of the most high-profile celebrities in the French media, with more than 2,100 magazine covers dedicated to him.

He wasn’t the first person to perform rock and roll in France, but in 1960, he became the first to popularize this style of music in the country. After rock, he launched the twist and the mashed potato, and although sometimes he is reproached for giving in to musical fashions, he anticipates them more often than he follows them. The various musical trends with which he has experimented – rock and roll, rhythm and blues, soul, psychedelic rock, pop – all have their origins in the blues, and despite interpreting numerous songs that are classified as “variété”, ballads and even country, rock remains his key reference.

He has made a major contribution to the French scene. At first decried, then unanimously acclaimed, he stamped his mark and transformed the traditional singing performance into a full-blown spectacle. Outside of French-speaking territories, he succeeded in breaking through thanks to several successful tours – notably in South America – allowing his reputation as a stage performer to cross borders. Johnny is considered as the only non-English-speaking rocker who is known (and acknowledged) by a wide international audience.

His longevity, like his vocal and stage performances, have earned him the recognition of his peers. From the Alhambra in 1960 to the present day, through 182 tours and 27 Parisian engagements, he has been seen by 28 million spectators, recorded more than 1,000 songs, composed around 100 himself, and sold more than 100 million records. His career has already earned him 40 gold records, 22 platinum, 3 diamond, and 9 Victoires de la Musique awards, for an official discography which includes 48 studio albums and 28 live albums.
