Black Coal (Black Coal, Thin Ice – Bai ri yan huo)


Northern China, 1999. A worker from a coal plant has been murdered, and several parts of his body are found in various locations across Manchuria. Police investigator Zhang heads the investigation but is forced to retire when he is severely wounded during the suspects’ arrest. Five years after the event, a group of similar murders are committed in the area, and seem to be related to a woman, the first victim’s wife. Zhang, now a security guard, decides to resume his investigation, getting dangerously closer to the mysterious woman.


DIAO YINAN

Born in 1968 in Xi’an (China), he graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing.

As a playwright and director, he is a leading figure in China’s avant-garde theatre. He started his career in film as an actor in Yu Likwai’s independent feature All Tomorrow’s Parties, which premiered at Cannes at Un Certain Regard in 2003. He was both writer and director of his feature film Uniform. In 2007, Night Train premiered at Cannes at Un Certain Regard and was screened to acclaim at numerous festivals.
