Lelouch Polars

Ever since he made his debut in the 1960s, Claude Lelouch has carried on making both big-budget and indie films, regardless of trends.

While he was in Moscow in 1957 capturing life’s moments on film, he realized he wanted to work in film. After he did his military service with the Military Film Unit in 1960, he felt he wanted to be his own boss and started his production company, Les Films 13. In 1960 he made his film debut, The Right of Man. With the money he made on the hundreds of “scopitones” and commercials he had directed, he produced his second feature, the critically acclaimed In the Affirmative (1962). With a few friends of his, including Pierre Barouh, Amidou and Jean-Pierre Kalfon, he shot To Be a Crook (1964) which garnered multiple awards at several festivals. 1966 marked a turning point in his career – everyone would then be humming A Man and A Woman’s main title on Cannes’s famed Croisette Boardwalk. A melodrama starring iconic Anouk Aimée and Jean-Louis Trintignant, Claude Lelouch’s A Man and a Woman won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. The film also took home two Academy Awards and no less than forty-two international awards.

Claude Lelouch has since written and directed over thirty feature films, and although some of his films were unsuccessful, he never lost faith. His films include Money, Money, Money (1972), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, The Good and the Bad (1976), Bolero : Dance of Life (1981), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Edith and Marcel (1983), Long Live Life ! (1984), which was presented at the Venice Film Festival, Going and Coming Back (1985), Itinerary of a Spoiled Child (1988), which was nominated for three César Awards, There Were Days… and Moons (1990), which was presented at the Venice Film Festival, All That … for This ?! (1993), Les Misérables (1994), which won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign-Language Film, Men Women : A User’s Manual (1996), One 4 All (1999), Crossed Tracks which was partially shot in Beaune (2007), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and What Love May Bring (2010).
