For its ninth edition, the Beaune International Thriller Film Festival demonstrates both its own vitality through the diversity of the movies screened, and the vitality of the thriller genre, through the wealth of themes tackled and the nationalities they represent. Chief among them, we find serial killers, who seem to be spreading like wildfire; meanwhile corruption, having become a staple among politicians, is surreptitiously yet virulently reaching into all forms of authority in society, whether in the police or the Church. The individualism of our societies, that one might call egotism, also plays a prominent role in the thrillers selected for this edition, under the banner of vengeance which requires patience, the kind of patience one needs to infiltrate gangs. Violence is omnipresent, but not excessive or gratuitous, more the graphic crystallization of bold filmmaking which will leave no one indifferent, and which as such appears disturbing. Through his cinematographic language, Park Chan-wook – an already-cult cineaste – is the talented living expression of this representation embodied by humanity. Jean-Paul Rappeneau, who honors us with his presence as President of the Jury, is no doubt well equipped to take its pulse.
